Rooftop Romance

Posted by Ben Stevens on

It all started in my early teens.  My dad was not a fan of the boy I liked, in fairness any boy at all when it came to me.  Don't get me wrong my dad loved me so very much but no boy was good enough for me by his standards.  As most teenagers will do though I found a way around his rules, we simply snuck our meetings.

We both lived in the same apartment building so it was relatively easy, especially with the fire escape right outside my window.  Almost every night the weather allowed I would climb the ladder to meet this handsome young boy on the roof.  We actually spent our entire time talking.  In fact, it wasn't until our last year of high school that he made a move and leaned over and kissed me.  Almost all of our romantic firsts were on that roof together.

We actually in our early 20s got engaged and married.  We eventually started having kids and moved into a house in our early 30s.  One thing though that remained constant even though jobs, stages of life, and friends changed was our secret getaways.  We still to this day retreat out of our bedroom window onto the roof of the lower floor.  We sit and talk about the day, it is our space for just us.

I know our tradition is a unique one but if you look close enough you will find you have your own little special things for you whether together or single.  And they may change over time but ours has remained the same over the years.  Our rooftop romance as I like to call it.
