Staying Warm In The Cold

Posted by Ben Stevens on

We have be on many adventures together my soulmate and I but our trip to the Canadian Rockies will last longer than most.  Why you ask?  Because we could have easily died but instead it was beautiful.

We were having an incredible week seeing glaciers and going up in gondolas to view the mountain tops with mind blowing 365 degree views.  But our week took an unexpected turn when we were driving towards Jasper and something happened nobody expects but yet it obviously happens.  The roads in British Columbia and parts of Alberta are littered with beware rocks and avalanche warning signs.  Well, we may not have expected it but we caught in an avalanche.

The sound I remember because I thought something was wrong with the car, it was a low rumbling.  Without warning it was like suddenly being thrown into the worst snowstorm ever that buries you in a matter of seconds.  The car was pushed into the guardrail but the blow was softened by snow immediately located between the rail and the car.  It was really over before it began, the quickness was unimaginable.  That's when we realized we were buried in the snow.  In those moments every possibility goes through your head.

In the end we called 911, which amazingly worked enough to hear to stay calm and someone would eventually be there to help.  The first few hours were pretty much conversation and trying to figure things out.  We assumed it wasn't too much snow on top of us or the roof would have caved in more than the slight indent we could see.  After several hours though we started to get cold and knew well enough that starting the car would be bad cause our exhaust would likely come right back in to the vehicle.

We began discussing options and it didn't take us long to realize we are completely secluded and even if they get to us we will at the very least hear them coming for us.  So in that moment of terror we distracted ourselves and had one of the most intense love making experiences of our life.  I think the combination of the situation, not knowing if this was the end and also just trying to stay warm heightened every part of the experience.  We then laid wrapped in a few blankets naked together until we heard an exterior sound.  We, of course, got dressed to limit embarrassment, not that they would have likely cared or expected any less of people trying to stay warm.

It took a few more hours to dig us out enough to free us from the car but we finally were free and to this day is one of the most unique and powerful moments together we have ever experienced.
